About The Beddow Montessori School

Back to School with Mask

The Beddow Montessori School was founded with one purpose - to build a space for all students to grow, learn and create with each passing day. Through a unique teaching approach and a truly passionate staff, we help students develop academically and personally to the highest level.

In the modern age, Montessori is often dismissed and underestimated. Within the last decade of Dr. Montessori’s life, she witnessed for the first time a photo projector being brought into a classroom and displaying nature images on the wall. She marveled at this invention, writing in her journal, “This would revolutionize education, for you wouldn’t have to leave the classroom to see the world. You could bring the world into the classroom.”

Dr. Montessori was well known to be a woman beyond her time, smoking cigars, taking medical courses with only male colleagues, and choosing “free love” over the constraints of marriage for women at that time. Her creation of a method of education for the future reflected the goals she herself pushed and wished to see society take on.

What plagues most Montessori schools of today is similar in its paradoxical nature to that which the Beddow Montessori school embodies, straddling a transcendent education philosophy and method in a highly traditional area and society-- AMI is plagued by its dogma and rigid hold onto times that have long passed; AMS is plagued by an eagerness to sprint forward and reinvent Montessori while often taking shortcuts that leave its science forgotten and behind.

These are the two predominant yet opposing bodies of Montessori in America today forming a paradoxical relationship providing little balance for the Montessori communities of today. The Beddow Montessori school has the privilege of being a school of both AMI and AMS throughout its history. But with its remarkable resources and community firmly in place, the vision of my education philosophy would be to help stabilize the broken aspects of Montessori up to this point, and use the school’s next stages to stakeout the path for revitalizing Montessori that is adapted to the 21st century, without either the dogma or the shortcuts that have plagued and deteriorated its promise.
